Job Description

Te Aute Trust Farm is an 817ha easy to medium hill country property, located 20 minutes south of Hastings in the Pukehou district. It is currently running 8000 stock units, with both sheep breeding and finishing and bull finishing.

The farm has a strong management team which includes the governing board, the current Farm Manager and the Farm Supervisor. Over the last 10 years, there has been significant investment in turning the property around by developing the infrastructure and setting sound stock policies to improve the farms profitability.

The current Farm Manager is now retiring after more than 30 years and the board of Te Aute Trust Farm are excited to offer this Farm Manager position to the market. Reporting to the supportive Farm Supervisor, the Farm Manager will be responsible for the planning, management and day-to-day running of the farm. This is a hands-on role within a farming operation that has many moving parts; there is a real opportunity here to showcase your skills and be recognised as a progressive Farm Manager.

The board have a ‘hands off’ approach operationally, however they expect the Farm Manager to work closely with them, have open communication lines and collaborate with the full management team. The appointee will work closely with the Supervisor and the farm’s Stock Agents in the procurement and sale of livestock on the property.

The successful applicant for this role will be a hardworking Farm Manager, or an experienced Stock/Block Manager wanting to take the next step, who is willing to understand, contribute and buy into the management team’s aspirations for the property, while planning to optimise profitability. To succeed in this role, you will come with:

  • An excellent understanding of the fundamentals of farming, with a high level of stockmanship and finishing skills
  • A keen interest and ability in utilising technology and modern systems to monitor feed and stock performance
  • The ability to work within the farms annual budget
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills, along with staff management skills
  • An ability to implement and complete annual R&M projects
  • A team of well-managed dogs (4 plus a pup)

The Farm Manager role comes with an excellent remuneration package including a warm and tidy 3-bedroom home, centrally located on the property. There is an excellent primary school at Pukehou, with a bus to Hastings for several high school options. Hawke’s Bay offers a variety of outdoor activities from beaches, wineries, sporting and social opportunities.
