Job Description

Big Hill Station is a 2,500Ha hill country sheep and beef farm in the Kereru district 45 minutes West of Hastings, Hawkes Bay.

 There is around 1,800Ha effective with the remainder being native bush. The contour ranges from medium to steep hill country with a smaller proportion of easy rolling and cultivatable land. The farm is worked in conjunction with 2 other properties closer to Hastings.

 We typically winter around 12,000su. This is comprised of a flock 5,200 Romney ewes and 300 Angus breeding cattle plus replacements. This is complemented by trading and fattening lambs and cattle.

 We are looking for a keen person to join our young team. Someone who is passionate about farming, has good work ethic and a willingness to learn. It is also essential to have a good sense of humor.

 The role would be to work in with the farm manager and casual shepherd with all day-to-day tasks on farm. Most of the job would involve:

-Stock work including mustering, yard work with both sheep and cattle as well as all other aspects of animal husbandry.

-Working in with the Manager to set weekly and monthly plans of stock work to be completed.

-Supervising junior staff eg summer students.

-Fencing and repairs and maintenance work in quieter times.


The candidate would have at least 2 years of experience working on a sheep and beef farms and ideally have had exposure to multiple farming systems.

-Need at least 4 broken in working dogs, though there is scope to challenge a larger team.

-Good communication skills are a must.

-Will need to be able to work independently and as part of a team.


Salary is competitive and dependent on experience. Inclusive in the package is a tidy 3-bedroom home located on the farm.

 Being next to the Ruahine ranges and the Ngaruroro river there is hunting and fishing right on the doorstep.

 The farm is in a tight knit rural community with plenty of recreational activities available such as cricket and squash at the local hall. There are 2 good pubs, each a 30 minute drive away, located in near-by Maraekakaho and Tikokino.

 There is a local primary school a close 15-minute drive away.
