Donald McCreary Farms Limited (DMFL) is a privately owned sheep and beef property, located in the strong farming district of Hinakura, South Wairarapa. The property comprises 1150ha effective, mostly medium hill country contour, with the balance being 50ha of flat ground for cultivation, cash/fodder crops.

DMFL is a well-established, turn-key farming operation with a history of proven production and financial performance. Owner, Donald McCreary won Wairarapa Farmer of the Year in 2014 and has the philosophy of doing the basics and doing them well.


Due to the Owner’s other business interests, the opportunity has now arisen for a motivated Farm Manager to join DMFL. The intention of this appointment is for the parties to develop a long-term relationship and explore the possibility of entering an Equity Partnership arrangement of sorts, in the near future. 

The Farm Manager will be responsible for the planning, management and day-to-day operation of the on-farm activities. Foremost, you will need a high level of stockmanship, along with a modern thought process and be keen to drive animal production and pasture management to optimise the profitability of this farming operation.

This is a hands-on role with a focus to maintain and improve the outputs of this already high performing business. It will be expected that the appointee has a good understanding of all compliance requirements and is ready to drive these.

This will be a busy operation, with many moving parts and will be a uniquely rewarding business to be involved in.


The successful applicant for this role will be a hardworking individual who is willing to understand, contribute and adopt the business’s aspirations and plans. To succeed in this role, you will bring your:

  • Excellent understanding of the fundamentals of farming.
  • Strong understanding of feed quality and supply/demand.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
  • Understanding and interest in utilising technology that will create on-farm efficiencies.
  • Strong forward planning and time management skills.
  • A team of 5-7 well-managed dogs.


Ideally, this role will lead to an Equity Partnership arrangement with an agreed lead-in time. The Farm Manager will contribute to the planning and budgeting of the property in collaboration with the Farm Owner and/or Consultant. You will have a direct line of communication with the Owner who is willing and available to support you in a mentoring capacity.

Just 20 minutes east of Martinborough, the location of the property provides for a wide range of recreational activities from deer hunting to all that Martinborough and the surrounding area offers: vineyards to olive groves, cafés, restaurants, hotels, cinema & boutique retail shopping.
