Job Description

Due to unfortunate circumstances, we find ourselves in urgent need of a new Stock Manager/2IC for our intensive cattle breeding, finishing and dairy grazing operation, and home to the Takapoto Angus Stud.

Close to Cambridge in the Waikato, proudly positioned on the banks of Lake Karapiro is Takapoto Estate, home of Takapoto Angus, Takapoto Estate Show Jumping, Vineyard and hospitality venue, and a large area of stunning parkland and gardens.

As part of Takapoto Estate the farming operation covers 520 effective ha’s of owned and leased land over three blocks. This position will primarily be responsible for the day-to-day operation of our 310 ha Beacon Hill lease property. This property is currently wintering 490 R1 dairy heifers, 20 trade steers and 120 stud and commercial breeding cows. We also take on 300 weaner dairy heifers over the summer. The property is a mixture of flats through to medium hill and a small amount of steeper country, which runs from the edge of Lake Karapiro up to the predator fence around Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain.

This position supports the Farm Manager, and as such the ability to contribute to discussions and overall management decisions and planning will be encouraged. It is expected that you will be able to take responsibility in the managers absence, and at times oversee contractors and other staff across the three properties.

While the position will carry a reasonable level of autonomy, the ability to work in a team environment is essential.

Key Attributes:

*Excellent pasture management and feed budgeting skills, and the ability to plan grazing rotations.

*A strong understanding of intensive grazing management.

*A strong understanding of, and pro-active approach to animal health.

*Effective communication skills, and the ability to relate to people from all levels.

*Good record keeping, and written communication skills. Computer literacy an advantage.

*An interest in cattle breeding and genetics. Experience with AI and ET would be an advantage.

*An enquiring mind, the ability to think outside the square, and problem solve.

*Experience with tractors, side by sides, ATVs, and motorbikes on hill country.

*A good understanding of, and adherence to H&S requirements.

*An understanding of water systems and electric fences, and excellent R&M skills.

*An interest in biological and regenerative farming would be an advantage.

*Pride in your work and surroundings.

*A good sense of humour.

*A maximum of two well controlled dogs would be an advantage, but not essential.
