Full time Drystock

Job Description

Matapiro Station is a privately owned farming operation, 25 minutes of Napier and Hastings, in the Hawke’s Bay farming district of Crownthorpe. This 2300ha Station is an iconic farming business that is successfully running a large-scale breeding and finishing operation.  This is a high performing property with good farming policies and excellent infrastructure in place.

Our clients are very proud of the Station, it’s history and it’s the achievements to date.

The Shepherd will work alongside the Stock Manager in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the property. Upon proving yourself there will be the opportunity to gain responsibility; there will be variety in your work involving stock and general work.

Due to the scale of the property and the results they are currently achieving, you will have the opportunity to learn about finishing stock, while working closely with an excellent herd of breeding cows. You will also be involved in learning about pasture management and organising rotations, which will help you develop a strong understanding of animal health.

As well as a positive can-do attitude, great initiative, and a passion for the industry, the successful applicant will come with:

  • A high level of stockmanship and 2-3 working dogs under good control.
  • The ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment, with an excellent work ethic, an inquiring mind, and a keenness to learn
  • Accurate record keeping skills.
  • Good animal welfare knowledge and practice.
  • Adherence to health & safety policies.
  • Fencing & general skills.
  • Handpiece, crutching, dagging, and drenching experience (through a conveyor system)

The Shepherd role comes with a competitive remuneration package with the choice of a couple of different housing options including a 3-bedroom home or the single Shepherds quarters, depending on your situation. The property is based in Crownthorpe, with Hastings and Napier both being an easy commute.

If you are keen to progress your farming career and learn the finer details of finishing stock and enjoy working with an established herd of Angus breeding cows, then this role would be a good place to establish your knowledge. Apply today!
