Job Description

Ohinewairua Station is a 7,500-hectare station, situated on the Napier-Taihape Road in the Central North Island, and is owned by longstanding family shareholders.  The station is running sheep, beef, and deer in both a breeding and finishing farming policy.

This is a well-developed farming business with excellent infrastructure throughout the property. There are good farming systems and cropping plans in place.

The station backs onto the Waiouru Army base and the ranges.

The Deer Manager will be responsible for implementing the deer policy on the Station and will manage the day-to-day operations of the deer block. This is a hands-on role, and the Deer Manager must be keen to drive animal production further.

There are times when you will be working autonomously and there will be shepherds available to help when required. You will be a valuable member of the Station’s wider team and at times will be required to help on the sheep and beef component of the farming operation.

The successful applicant will be a self-starter who is well planned, organised with a high level of integrity and strong communication skills, and will bring the following:

  • Experience working with Deer – mustering and yard work.

  • Velveting ticket would be beneficial, otherwise they will put you through this course.

  • A high level of stockmanship and 3-5 working dogs under good control.

  • Well-rounded general skills.

  • Computer literacy – monthly stock reconciliations will be required.

The Deer Manager role comes with an attractive remuneration packaging including a tidy and warm 3-bedroom home, with carport and separate large lockable double garage. Based in the Moawhango district, there is a strong rural community with plenty of social happenings at the local hall. There is ample hunting and fishing locally and the ski fields are only 45 minutes away.
