Spring Valley Enterprises is a breeding and finishing operation owned by the Wyeth family just 10 minutes north-west of Masterton in Kaituna. The overall farming business winters 16,500su over 2400ha, and is split over 3 properties: Spring Valley, Ratanui & Maranui all within a 20-minute drive There is a mix of fertile cropping land with 600ha recently cultivated and the rest being rolling to steeper hill country. The business runs Highlander sheep and Angus cattle genetics, with all progeny finished.

The family consider themselves the caretakers of the land, producing net-carbon zero beef, with a focus on converting grass into top-quality product that is both sustainably grown and ethically produced. They have established a strong environmental aspect within their operation, by fencing off water ways and completing a lot of native plantings. There is also 400ha of native bush on farm that they are nurturing.  Part of their farming ethos is “If we look after the land, it will look after us”.

As the Experienced Shepherd on the home block, Spring Valley, you will be working alongside and reporting to the farm owner with all day-to-day tasks. This is an 850ha property with 150ha recently cultivated for cropping and the remainder offering good mustering on rolling to steeper hill country.

You will have a natural curiosity and be a progressive person with a willingness to learn and know the ‘why’ behind decisions. This is a highly organised and well managed operation where there is plenty of information on offer to help you progress your career to the next level.  

The role requires you to be a skilled stockperson with a sound team of 3-4 well controlled working dogs with mustering experience on hill country.  The owners have invested in the latest farming technologies for reporting and recording, including FarmIQ, drones, EID ear tags and using Racewell weigh systems. With the use of this technology, you will be required to provide accurate information, from stock movements and transfers to tallies.

You will get to work autonomously but also be part of the larger team, getting the opportunity to work throughout the farming business.  Over the winter period the balance of work is 50:50 stock to general and does require you to help with the tractor operating, fencing and any other general tasks that are required.



Our client is looking for an Experienced Shepherd with an eagerness to continue learning and improving their farming abilities. Having keen observation skills and strong attention to detail along with the below will be key to your success in the role:

+        Strong pasture management and awareness.

+        High standard of animal husbandry.

+        Keen observation skills and attention to detail.

+        Computer/technically savvy (FarmIQ will be taught) providing, thorough and accurate information into the farming programmes.

+        The ability to work efficiently and effectively alone.

+        Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.

+        Flexibility to work as seasonal conditions dictate.


+        This farming operation offers a wide variety of experiences from hill country mustering through to finishing.

+        The owners have an open book approach with farm information to enable you grow your knowledge.

+        Salary will be dependent on skill level starting at $65,000+ plus accommodation.

+        Fully renovated in 2020 and healthy home certified, the 3-bedroom cottage has an open plan, kitchen, dining and lounge area.

+         Be exposed to learning the latest in modern farming technologies.

+        The location allows for easy access to town for schooling, recreational and partner work opportunities if required.
