WHERE

Ātihau-Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI) is a large-scale Maori agribusiness comprising 40,800 ha across eight sheep and beef farms, and one dairy farm in the Central North Island, at the foothills of Mount Ruapehu. Approximately 83% of the land resource is principally for sheep and cattle with dairy and forestry interests making up the balance.

AWHI is committed to farming in a “sustainable” manner within an “integrated one farm framework” whereby each farm works together to maximise synergies and economies of scale. The business is committed to sustainable faming by integrating environmental stewardship with farm profitability.

This position is located on Ohorea Station which is a 5628 ha total sheep and beef breeding unit and is a mix of rolling to steeper hill country with larger paddocks and good traditional mustering opportunities. Ohorea carries 37,000su, including 15,000 ewes and 900 cows, all replacements are kept, with the rest transferred as store stock to the finishing properties.

WHAT

As the Head Shepherd/2IC you will be working alongside and reporting to the Farm Manager. You will be assisting the Farm Manager in the day-to-day planning and be responsible for delegating and allocating tasks to the team. This role is an excellent opportunity as a steppingstone into management.

There will be times when the Farm Manager is off farm and as the Head Shepherd you will be required to act as the 2IC in their absence.
