Job Description

We are seeking a Shepherd General to assist with the day-to-day stock operation on Waitatapia. Waitatapia is a progressive, diverse farming operation located in the lower Rangitikei. A 2000ha sheep, beef and cropping property, with the stock operation predominantly focusing on finishing. 

We are a diverse business with a friendly, motivated and supportive team. The successful applicant will join a team working on the stock side of the farm. You will work closely with the Stock Manager plus casuals when required. The position will be made up of mainly stock work including moving mobs of stock and all activities commonly associated with sheep and cattle farming. We utilise modern facilities and equipment for handling sheep and cattle. During quieter periods the role will include general farm maintenance work so a basic of knowledge of fencing and tractor driving skills is desirable but not essential.  

The position available would suit a motivated, honest, enthusiastic person who wants a varied role. You must be happy to work both in a team and independently with a positive attitude. Our shepherd general will have good communication skills, initiative and take pride in the maintenance and care for all equipment and property.
The role is a live on farm role. Staff advancement and personal growth is important to us. We love supporting staff to further develop their skills and their career advancement.

Our stock policy is centred around intensive finishing systems, trading lambs and cattle with a small number of breeding cows and ewes.

Current policies consist of:

·   Finishing approx. 2000 hd of cattle

·   Lamb finishing 20-30,000 a yr

·   Finishing approx.. 160 bulls a yr

·   250 breeding cows

·   250 ewes

3-4 dogs under good control are required.

Waitatapia is a convenient 10-minute drive from Bulls, with close proximity to Wanganui, Marton, Feilding and Palmerston North, allowing access to health centres, supermarkets, schools, bars and a variety of sporting clubs (netball, rugby, squash, tennis and golf). As well as very active local young farmers club.

A competitive remuneration and a modern tidy warm 3-bedroom house on farm is available for the successful applicant.
