WHERE

Ngahere Station is based in the Omakere District, a farming settlement in Central Hawke’s Bay, only 5 minutes from the beautiful beach settlement of Pourerere and 25 minutes east of Waipawa. It is part of a larger family-owned farming business, with the 3 other properties (Cheviot/St Lawrence Station, Abbotsford, and Highgrove) all running a mix of breeding and finishing policies.

Ngahere Station, is 1525ha total (1445ha effective) with a mix of medium to steeper hill country that runs from sea level to 1500ft. This is an extensive breeding property running Romney ewes and Angus Hereford x cattle, with all replacement stock kept and the surplus stock sent to the other properties for finishing.

WHAT

Working alongside the Manager of Ngahere Station, the Shepherd General will need at least 2-3 years’ farming experience and a team of 4-6 capable working dogs. Some hill country mustering experience is required with the paddocks ranging from 4ha right up to 40ha, and 80ha on some of the steeper country.

The role will be an 80:20 mix of stock to general work, with a small amount of handpiece work, as they get contractors in for the bigger jobs. Fences on the property are in pretty good condition, with some R&M required to be done by the Shepherd General. There will also be some tractor work and general maintenance through the winter. This is an opportunity to work both autonomously and within a smaller team environment, allowing you to take some responsibility for your work.
