Job Description

  • Located in the rural district of Ashley Clinton, Central Hawkes Bay.
  • Ability to work on the same property as your partner/pre-existing relationship.
  • Well-respected employers who will ensure a varied workload.

WHERE

Punawai Farm is a family owned and operated farming business in the rural district of Ashley Clinton, Central Hawke’s Bay. This immaculate 500ha / 470ha effective property runs sheep breeding/finishing, cattle finishing and there’s cash cropping as part of the overall farming business.

As well as producing high-quality, high-performing stock, the business strategy has included a significant amount of native planting and the development of wetlands. The owners and manager aim to strike a balance between environmental awareness and stock management. Other sustainability initiatives include monitoring water quality, and soil testing – backed up by careful soil management practices.

The farm manager implements a solid business plan that guides the management of pastures and animal welfare on farm. He runs the farming operation and oversees maintenance of the owner’s asset with support from these two roles. Punawai Farm has a historic homestead, comprising 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and large living areas.  There is also a large established garden with trees and hedging.

WHAT

The Groundsperson / General Farm Hand and the Homestead Manager roles have become available following the retirement of the current employees. This is the third time Rural Directions has had the privilege to work with Punawai Farms and take these two roles to the market.

Ideally, these roles would suit a couple or individuals with an existing relationship as there is only shared accommodation on offer. The Groundsperson / General Farm Hand role is the primary position.

Groundsperson / General Farm Hand:

Typically, our clients see this role as being 60% Groundsperson responsibilities and 40% General farm hand responsibilities each week. There will be flexible depending on the farm manager’s schedule.

The Groundsperson role involves looking after all aspects of the gardens and maintenance of both the owner’s homestead and the manager’s house, along with the maintenance of the farm buildings, and any other general tasks on the property that may need to be completed.

Having a keen interest and solid knowledge of gardening and trees is essential as this is the main priority of the role, which consists of everything from lawns, tree maintenance, hedging, gardens, and the upkeep of the swimming pool and tennis courts. There will be other duties in relation to the homestead for example, washing the outside of the house, clearing gutters, and general maintenance.

The General Farm hand tasks involve helping on the farm, tractor and machinery work, fencing (R&M) weeds, and farm maintenance etc.

There is a lot of autonomy in this role therefore you will need to be proactive and think about what needs to be done ahead of time. With the mix of gardening and farming it is a physical role and requires a good level of personal fitness.

Homestead Manager:

The owners of Punawai Farm also have the requirement for a Homestead Manager to work 10 hours/week (minimum) to provide essential housework assistance at their home, with any spare time to be made up in the gardens. There are times when extra assistance may be required when the owners’ family or friends are staying and that could include helping with meal preparation. For this role you will need strong attention to detail, you will have a positive, can-do attitude.
