WHERE

Mangatapu Farm is a family-owned sheep and bull finishing operation, centrally located northeast of Bulls, and bounds the Rangitikei River, 10 minutes from Bulls, Halcombe and Feilding respectively.

The property is 700ha total and 600ha effective, with a mix of river flats through to rolling hills, with some steeper areas. The farm also has areas of native bush along with a small number of pine trees planted in the steeper areas. There are two blocks of QE11 Trust land with streams running down to the Rangitikei River.

Mangatapu Farm is well-developed with good subdivision and several areas of techno fencing to maximise rotational grazing management. The business finishes around 4000 lambs and 1200 beef bulls annually with the support of winter & summer crops.

This is a modern farming business with a strong focus on doing the basics very well. Monitoring and measuring are key tools utilised, and the business is currently implementing Resolution farm software for data storage.       

WHAT

The appointee to this Farm Manager role will be a motivated person who understands and enjoys the lamb and cattle finishing side of farming. A willingness to learn the current farm system and work with the owner and advisor to continue to run and develop the property with a continuous improvement mindset is required.

Experience with rotational grazing and a strong focus on the detail will be key requirements along with measuring and monitoring the stock’s health and performance. All stock receive a quarantine drench on arrival to the property and faecal egg counts of lambs will be monitored with drenching administered accordingly. The farm has achieved good results via this monitoring process.

A good baseline of computer literacy is important in this role for completing monthly stock reconciliations along with implementing the Resolution farming programme into the business.

This Farm Manager role is hands-on in all aspects of the farming operation, from stock and pasture management to setting rotations and general tasks (handpiece, fencing including electrics and spraying). The Farm Manager will be supported by a 2IC, and casuals as required.

WHO

  • Solid farming background, potential for a current Farm Manager or Stock Manager looking to step up.
  • Strong level of stockmanship and 3 working dogs.
  • Attention to detail with animal health, measuring and monitoring.
  • Take pride in your presentation and care of the infrastructure and the aesthetics of the property.
  • Be well-planned and highly organised.
  • Capable in all aspects of farming and able to complete general tasks.
  • Able to use a handpiece for crutching and dagging.
  • Good understanding and compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (2015).
  • A good baseline of computer literacy.
