WHERE

Uruwhenua Farms Ltd is a third-generation family-owned dairy farming business based in Takaka, a small town situated at the southeastern end of Golden Bay, at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. The farm operates on both sides of the Takaka Valley Highway, it is a stunning location nestled between the Abel Tasman and the Kahurangi National Parks. Due to the location and visibility of the farm the business requires a high level of compliance, both environmentally and with the Health & Safety requirements of stock and people.

The business runs a closed farming operation, milking 730 cows on a 270ha dairy platform, with a 200ha runoff block 20 minutes away that supports the young stock for the business.

The farm operates at a high level of automation this includes the use of Halter, which means the cows get themselves in at 5.00am for milking. With the farms ability to consistently measure and monitor they have now established themselves within the top 3% genetic merit herds in New Zealand. 

WHAT

Uruwhenua Farms Ltd seek a high performing Assistant Farm Manager who will be an integral part of the operation supporting the Farm Manager whilst also having your own specific areas of responsibilities following and implementing the farm plan. On the Farm Manager’s days off, this position will take ownership of all day-to-day tasks on farm including the automation aspects and checking its accuracy.

The scope of this role is truly exciting as you will gain exposure across the operational aspects of the farming business. These employers reward hard work and are committed to professionally developing the best people.

Ideally you will have 4 - 5 years farming experience and have a strong drive and passion for the dairy sector. You must have a good understanding of all aspects of dairy farming, with the key focus being on cows and pasture. A strong level of feed and pasture management is key, with an understanding of allocating feed, and what the cow requirement per day is and adjusting this as required.

With the automation on farm, you will bring your strong computer and technical skills along with the motivation required to work in a highly productive farming environment. Training will be given across the technologies used, including Halter.

WHO

Our client is looking for an Assistant Farm Manager with a good understanding of all aspects of dairy farming and feed and pasture management knowledge. The below are also key to success in this role:

  • Strongly understand the workings of an automated dairy shed.
  • Excellent animal health identification and management including lame cows and mastitis.
  • High level of feed and pasture management knowledge.
  • General skills including tractor and fencing.
  • Excellent attitude, enjoy learning and a strong work ethic.
  • Strong level of computer literacy.
  • Have some staff management experience.
  • Sense of humour and be a good team player.
