WHERE

Waimaha Farms Limited is a 565ha property, including a 50ha lease, based an hour northwest of Hamilton in the rural district of Matira, in the Waikato region. This easy to medium hill country property is farmed as a breeding and finishing business, currently running 1200 breeding ewes/replacements with all progeny finished and a larger scale bull finishing operation wintering approximately 700 bulls with up to 1200 at peak in spring, the majority being younger stock.

After purchasing the farm 2.5 years ago, the owners have focused on investing in the development of the property to ensure the business has a high level of infrastructure. They have completed a large part of a 5-year development plan, including the completion of a metalled laneway from the front to the back of the property, allowing for easy and safe access. Further sub-division of paddocks, upgrading and extension of the reticulated water system and upgrades of the sheep and cattle facilities are well underway.

WHAT

This Farm Manager role is an exciting opportunity to align your farming skills with owner’s who are extremely proud of their farming asset. The entry level for the appointee is flexible as the owners will support and mentor the right person into their first managers role. Likewise, this role will also suit an experienced manager who can step in and hit the ground running.

You will need to understand the benefits of monitoring and measuring to meet targets and stock performance objectives, and the decision making that can be implemented as an outcome of this data.  The role involves the full day-to-day management on farm from the stock through to general work.

The owners seek someone wanting to take ownership and who is keen to follow the existing plan and also present ideas for consideration. Between 1st May – 31st December, it is expected daily target weight gain for a bull is 1kg weight gain per day on farm through a combination of stocking rates, pasture growth rates and management of feed intakes.

WHO

Waimaha Farms limited are looking for a Farm Manager with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage the stock to a high level. The below are also key to success in this role:

  • Strong self-motivation, able to plan and manage own workday.
  • Good understanding of measuring and monitoring stock.
  • High level of feed and grazing management capability including basic competency in formal feed budgeting.
  • Good level of both verbal and written communication.
  • Strong understanding of animal health identification and appropriate management.
  • Computer literacy and technology skills.
  • A desire to grow commercial competencies and business skills to support sound decision making.
  • Broad understanding of farming markets, regulation and compliance.
  • Current full NZ Driver’s Licence.
