WHERE

Ohinewairua Station is 7,500-hectare largescale farming operation situated on the Napier-Taihape Road in the Central North Island and is owned by longstanding family shareholders. It consists of flat to rolling hill country and backs onto the Waiouru Army base, with the Kaimanawa ranges nearby.                 

The station runs sheep, beef and deer in both a breeding and finishing farming policy. This is a well-developed farming business which has established infrastructure throughout the property and good farming systems and cropping plans in place.                                                                        

WHAT

With the farming business running a mix of breeding and finishing, over the three stock classes ideally you will bring some experience with fattening and finishing of livestock and understand prioritising key stock classes at different times of the year. The deer side of the operation runs 1700 hinds including replacements, along with 260 velveting stags. Previous experience working with deer and understanding their behavioural patterns will be required. For this role you will need at least 6 working dogs with pups coming through.

Alongside the management of the stock, you will be responsible for managing the team of 6 shepherds and 3 generals. This includes delegating tasks as well as supporting and mentoring the junior staff.

This is a senior role within Ohinewairua Station’s farming team providing support to the Station Manager as well as the wider team. You will assist the Station Manager with business administration including data entry and updating the station’s animal health diary through FarmIQ. There is an HR component also, requiring an understanding of IEA’s and the Employment Relations Act (2000) legislation. You will need a sound understanding of Health & Safety in Employment compliance. The Station Manager will also involve you in contract management and purchasing arrangements with suppliers.

WHO

As the 2IC at Ohinewairua Station, you will be working closely with the Station Manager to run the day-to-day operations of the station. The below are also key to success in this role:

  • At least 5 years farming experience with sheep and, beef and some deer farming knowledge is required.
  • Previous staff management and ability to organise the team.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong stock and pasture management skills.
  • Deer velveting ticket preferred but can be trained on farm.
  • Strong animal health identification and management.
  • Health and Safety in Employment knowledge.
  • Reasonable level of computer and recording skills.
  • Full Driver’s license.
