WHERE

Peko Contracting is a privately owned Agricultural Spraying business based in the rural township of Waverley, South Taranaki. The business has been running for over 30 years and is highly regarded within the South Taranaki farming district.  Their main area of spraying is between Whanganui and Hawera and can have a spray unit based in each area.

Peko Contracting have 5 Toyota Landcrusiers and an Isuzu truck that have been fully converted spray units. They also have 4 full-time staff (some have been with them for over 8 years) and during the busy periods they employ several part-time employees.

The main part of the spray season is 40 plus hours a week, weather dependent, due to the windy west coast they normally have a spray window from daylight through to lunchtime.

Busy times:

  • Late July – end August, work picks up
  • Sept – to Christmas, cropping (busy time)
  • January – February, slower
  • March – crop spraying and spraying out as crops come off

During the off season they complete mechanical R&M and can rebuild a spray wagon.    

WHAT

The primary function of this position is to spray out land for cropping and also spray crops for bugs and pests.

The main clients are Dairy and Drystock, with the bulk of work, spraying out paddocks and when as the crops come through, spraying them with insecticide as required. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and handling chemical application.
  • Cleaning machinery.
  • Using GPS with Tabular Mapping.
  • Maintaining relationships with clients.

WHO

Our client is looking for an agricultural spraying contractor who is organised and has a strong work ethic. The below are also key to success in this role:

  • Flexible with experience, training can be given.
  • Ability to self-manage and work autonomously.
  • Be accurate with your reporting and recording.
  • Must have a full class 1 licence.
  • Strong level of attention to detail.
  • Being mechanically minded is beneficial.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Be accurate and diligent with the sprays.
  • Having a chemical handler licence beneficial but not essential.
  • Agricultural background and experience dealing with farmers and machinery.
