Job Description

Lorne Peak is after our next energetic and passionate team member who’s wanting to expand their skillset and broaden their horizons in a diverse and progressive farming environment.

Bit about us:

  • Developing family farm, always trying something new or challenging the status quo
  • 12,500ha owned or leased at Lorne Peak ranging from intensive pivot irrigation, lucerne and winter cropped flats to a fair bit of improved hill country with some high country out back and supported with a 600ha finishing farm 50 minutes away in Mossburn.
  • Varied stock classes, from 10,000 Romney ewes with hoggets mated, to ¼ bred ewes and winter lambs, 600 Angus breeding cows with heifers mated and progeny finished off beet along with lots of bulls of varying colours.
  • Approx. 40,000su with a 60:40 sheep/cattle split with a large proportion of finishing stock.

Team culture, personal growth & perseverance are important to us as we believe they’ll be the reason the farm (and team members) perform and reach their potential. A growth mindset along with a can-do work ethic that is efficient and organized is also important.

Bit about the job:

You’ll be helping lead two shepherds while working closely with and reporting to our stock manager Logan at Lorne Peak. This is a mid-level leadership position where you will be expected to lead yourself and others while taking responsibility for varying areas or stock classes across the farm. Given the emphasis we place on team, we do not run fixed areas of responsibility instead encouraging adaptability and proficiency across our farming operation which we believe will equip you well for future career progression.

The stock team is supported by myself, a fencer general and tractor driver along with another stock manager at Mossburn. This is a stock focused role but some general tasks will be required of you as we want to continue developing you into a well-rounded farmer. There’s lots going on so there is always opportunity for progression and additional responsibility – we will challenge you and at times extend you past what you think you’re capable of but with support, we believe this is important for personal growth. We’re committed to providing on the job and external training to ensure you progress in your career, with several of the team involved in discussion groups, Halo leadership or AgITO courses.

Bit about you:

  • Eye for detail and excellent stockmanship
  • Excellent communicator and wanting to develop as a coach & mentor
  • Hungry to learn and progress
  • Open minded and adaptable, interested in varying stock classes and intensive finishing systems

What we offer:

  • 40 minutes south of Queenstown on the main road with good hunting, fishing and social clubs nearby.
  • Warm, modern 3 bedroom house on farm.
  • Good quality dog and stockwork with scope to grow.

For more information, please contact either myself, Matthew Tayler 0274787131, or stock manager Logan Mackie 0275313932 first if you want to work out if this is the environment for you.

Cover letter, CV and references will be required.
