Job Description

We are looking for a motivated shepherd to step into an important role at Lake Hawea Station, taking over from our shepherd who has been with us for the past five years.

Lake Hawea Station is a 6500ha high-country station located 25 minutes from Wanaka and 5 minutes from Hawea. The property is positioned on the shores of Lake Hawea providing a picturesque location, excellent for outdoor activities.

Wintering 11,000 stock units consisting of merino sheep and angus cattle. A percentage of lambs and calves are sold at weaning which varies depending on the season.

The position provides an opportunity to experience a balance of extensive high-country farming, combined with intensive farming on a mix of dry-land and irrigated flats, with a regenerative approach. Jobs will involve all aspects of farming, including stock work, fencing, tractor work and general farm duties. We like to challenge the norm and aren’t afraid to try new things. 

 A background in fine wool would be an advantage, or a genuine interest and willingness to learn. A bespoke on-site accommodation and tourism business also operates on-farm, while this role is not directly related, professionalism and respect for guests is essential.

 A two-bedroom farm cottage is provided on the property, along with good quality workwear. We’re committed to supporting the successful candidates ongoing development, including opportunities to gain further education and qualifications. Remuneration will be based on experience.

Requirements:

  • 2 years minimum farming experience with sheep and cattle
  • Excellent stockmanship and patience
  • Capable of following daily plans and completing tasks efficiently and reliably
  • Open minded and adaptable
  • Previous experience with farm machinery
  • The ability to keep up-to-date and accurate records
  • 4-6 well controlled working dogs
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer skills and a willingness to learn new systems
  • Tidy with an eye for detail
  • A current New Zealand full drivers licence
