Job Description

Tommy’s Creek farm are looking for a capable and driven person to manage the stock and day to day running of our 450 hectare farm. This is a family owned farm and the candidate must be confident to be able to often work with sole charge of the property. We are currently running crossbred ewes and have grazing contracts for dairy heifers.

Located in the North Canterbury foothills, this farm consists of rolling hills with some steeper country and river flats. There is an irrigated block (40 ha) with sprinkler irrigation.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Confident working on their own on a day to day basis
  • Minimum 3-4 years experience shepherding
  • Has a good team of dogs
  • Driven and shows passion to succeed and drive the property production
  • Reliable and has excellent communication

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent stockmanship and pastoral management, particularly grazing management and feed budgeting. A university qualification in agriculture or farm management would be beneficial but not necessary. All training will be provided for irrigation management if no previous experience. You will work with the farm owner who will provide close guidance and allow for weekends off and support on busy days etc. The farm hires casual staff as required.

Up to 4 working dogs under good command would be enough for this property.

This is a very exciting opportunity for an up and coming farmer wanting to take on a bit more responsibility and have sole charge of a property on a day to day basis. Contractors used for all cultivation, spraying and hay/baleage.

We are located 35 minutes from Amberley and a bit over an hour from Christchurch. Hurunui college based in Hawarden has primary and secondary school bus at the gate.

The salary package includes a comfortable and warm 3 bedroom house, power and internet included, house mutton, vet bills and dog food. On farm vehicles supplied. Competitive pay package offered relevant to experience.

At least 2 references for work history and a character reference would be required.

Start date early February 2020, can be negotiable.
