Job Description

Otematata Station is looking for a professionally minded stock manager. This is a newly created position that will work as part of the management team, as the station moves through a generational change and progresses into the future. This management team will consist of the new stock manager, the owners and the stock manager on Awakino Downs (A support property near Kurow).

Otematata Station is a family run business that has a history extending 120 years. We run a Merino flock of 29,000 sheep as well as 500 cattle consisting of Hereford and Angus breeds across some 40,000 hectares of Upper Waitaki high country.

We are looking for someone to embrace the high country lifestyle we know and love, as well as adopting a modern mind-set to the current farming environment. Being able to work and articulate well to the 8 permanent members of the team is a must. As the stock manager the responsibilities will include the day to day management of staff and implementation of the stock policy. Diagnosing and treating all animal health issues and demonstrate best practice in the areas of animal handling, health and welfare. They will also support and assist in the development of junior staff.

The ideal candidate will have:

High country experience and be proficient with horses, dogs and an extensive merino farming system.

Previous farm management experience.

Good understanding of agronomy.

Excellent animal husbandry skills.

Financial awareness of farming decisions.

Proven leadership and communication skills.

Tertiary qualified or Ag ITO L4 Sheep and/or Beef.

Willingness to work with computers and Farm IQ.


As part of a negotiated remuneration package there is a 3 bedroom house available. A position is also available for a spouse or partner - with regular income while working from home.

There are plenty of recreational activities available in the Waitaki Valley with the lake and mountains close by, plus rugby, netball and squash.  A play centre, kindy and pre-school are not too far in either direction, plus two Primary schools, both of which have a school bus available.
