Big Hill Station
Big Hill Station is a 2,700Ha hill country sheep and beef farm in the Kereru district 35 minutes West of Hastings, Hawkes Bay.
There is around 2,000Ha effective with the remainder being native bush. The contour ranges from medium to steep hill country with a small proportion of easy cultivatable land and is worked in conjunction with 2 other properties closer to Hastings.
We have a nucleus flock/herd 7,300 Romney ewes and 300 Angus breeding cattle. This is complemented by trading and fattening lambs and cattle.
We are looking for a keen person to join our young team. Someone who is passionate about farming, has good work ethic and a willingness to learn. It is also essential to have a good sense of humour.
The role would be to work in with the general and operations manager with all day-to-day tasks on farm. Most of the job would involve stock work including mustering, yard work with both sheep and cattle as well as all other aspects of animal husbandry. Over the quieter times there will be some general work involving fencing, repairs and maintenance.
The ideal candidate would have at least a couple years of experience working on a sheep and beef farm. You would need at least 2 capable working dogs, though there is scope to challenge a larger team.
The hope is this position will develop along with the successful applicant’s ability to take on more responsibility.
Accommodation (possibly shared) in furnished 3-bedroom quarters is available initially, with other options possibly available.
Remuneration will be based on experience.
Next to the Ruahine ranges and the Ngaruroro river there is hunting and fishing right on the doorstep.
There are a couple of good pubs in Maraekakaho district which is a 20-minute drive away and the closest towns are Hastings, 35 minutes away and Havelock North 45 minutes.

The property is located 45 minutes out of Hastings, with the Ruahine ranges and Ngaruroro River as it’s western and northern boundaries. The contour of the farm ranges from medium to steep hill country and also includes around 600Ha of native bush. The operation also includes 2 other blocks in the Maraekakaho district. These are of easier contour that add an additional 650Ha.
Currently, over the three properties we are running 7,300 Romney ewes and 300 Angus cows. The main focus of the operation is on sheep production with all homebred lambs finished on farm. To add to this there is a large lamb trading and finishing component.
