The role and opportunity

AgResearch Farms and Facilities group is looking for a passionate and motivated Farm Senior Operations Technician to join the team at the Aorangi Research Farm close to Palmerston North. This is a 3-year fixed-term position working on a full-time basis.

What you will be doing

Reporting to the Research Farm Manager, you will be the Senior Technician within a small team providing facility preparation, animal husbandry and services to various research projects. You will be working alongside a number of technicians and researchers planning the research projects, co-ordinating resources and equipment, collecting data and samples.

This “hands on” role requires someone who has the work experience to demonstrate a high level of expertise to perform technical and animal husbandry duties, including planning, sampling, data collection and recording. The work involves collaborating with the science teams to successfully conduct their science trials while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, legislative, heath & safety and regulatory compliance.

Your ideal background

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or at least 5 years’ working experience in a similiar position
  • Strong project management and communication skills
  • Ability to work confidently and safely with livestock
  • A keen attitude and motivation to work in an innovative environment
  • Ability to work autonomously while being a senior member of a collaborative team
  • Ability to manage varied trials at one time
  • Competent in data collection and collation, including electronic data capture and retrieval
  • Valid and clean Class 1 NZ Driver's Licence, with Class 2 desirable
  • A solid understanding of pastoral farming systems, with practical experience (desirable)
  • Demonstrates safe workplace behaviour by taking all practicable steps to ensure own and other’s safety in the workplace
