Shepherd – South Canterbury

We are seeking a person to fill the above position as after 2.5 years, our current shepherd is moving on to a manager’s role.

Duties include Stock work, fencing, farm maintenance, crutching, drenching, recording, weighing and some tractor work. The successful applicant must be fit, be able to work unassisted and as part of a team and good stockmanship is essential.

Belmont Station is a 950ha, 7500su Sheep and Beef property situated at Cave, South Canterbury between Timaru and Fairlie. There is a range of lucerne river flats, rolling developed hills, tussock country to steep hill country. Also, an active program fencing and planting native bush areas.

We farm Perendale ewes, Angus cows, Freisan bulls as well as 3 Sheep studs. Stock wintered - 500 Stud Suffolk, South Suffolk and Charollais ewes, 2700 Perendale ewes, 140 Angus cows, 950 ewe hoggets, 130 R1 Angus steers and heifers, 120 R1 Friesian bulls, 50 R2 trading cattle, 150 Stud ram hoggets sold at our On-Farm Ram Sale. We endeavour to finish stock, season permitting.

You will:

  • Be able to work unassisted and part of a team and will be involved in the day-to-day decision making of the operation.
  • Have good stockmanship.
  • Have at least one year farming experience.
  • Demonstrate a hunger to learn.
  • Have good working dog/s.
  • Have NZ Drivers Licence (essential).
  • Be competent driving vehicles on hills (essential).
  • Have NZ residency or valid NZ work visa. (essential).
