I have a wife Rebekah and four kids aged 6-13. Rebekah is a trained Landscape Designer but at present she is employed as a teacher in Early Childhood at Riverstones in Lumsden. We view family as an important part of farming and we are looking for an employer with strong family values.
Currently I am Stock Manager on a family owned farm called Christies Farm situated near Mossburn. The farm is 650 hectares and we have 5000 Mixed age Coopdale Ewes, 1400 hoggets, 55 Rams and 30 Hereford cross Steers. The ewes are wintered on a grass rotation, the 2 tooths and hoggets are wintered on Swedes/Kale and we also winter 400 Dairy Cows on Kale and turnips and adlib balage. We are able to fatten around 7000 lambs and keep about 1400 ewe lambs as replacements. The cultivation work is predominantly completed by the Farm owner , with seeding being contracted out. Lambing is intensive with daily beats and mothering on. Tailers are contracted.
My role as Stock Manager involves planning stock rotational grazing, animal health, fencing maintenance, lamb weighing, looking after shearing and spraying contractors, assisting farm owner with fertilizer plans and winter crop planning.Also it involves putting my hand to whatever is needed eg firewood, weed control, vehicle maintenance etc. I have initiated the process of using Farm IQ and we are coming to grips with the software.
Previous to the above role I have been employed as a Farm General for North Range Station( 1500 hectares) and as a 2ic on a Dairy Support block for 1000 r1s and 1000r2s.
At present I am completing a Level 5 Primary ITO Certificate in Production Management. Previously I have completed the Next Generation Programme with Beef and Lamb NZ and also a Level 3 Feeding Cert with Ag ITO.
In the future I plan to join a local Catchment group if I can find one that will be of benefit. I often attend workshops provided by Northern Southland Vets in our area.
I have one eye dog and one Huntaway. My dogs are under good control. I am happy to increase my team if the work is there for them. At present our ewes are very free and having a large team is not desirable. I am not your classic Stock Manager who needs a massive team of Dogs. I am happy to focus on all areas of the role required.
Outside of work I enjoy coaching kids rugby and keeping fit. I am a keen duck shooter and I have two labrador dogs.
I am looking for a role that will allow me move to the next level in my career and help to grow my skills as a stockman and as a Manager. I am a strategic thinker and I like to use benchmarking and data to compare production across the farm in various areas. I am adaptable to any situation and would enjoy the challenge of working with Juniors and passing on knowledge and skills
