Senior Station Hand (Livestock)
St Johnstone is seeking a Senior Station Hand (Livestock) to join a family-run farming business at Campbell Town, Northern Midlands, Tasmania.
St Johnstone is a mixed farming operation, ten minutes from Campbell Town, with a focus on sheep and mixed cropping. St Johnstone breeds prime lambs, breeds both BLM and Merino sheep, produces an 18-micron merino wool clip and grows cereals, canola, grass seed, poppies and straw. We are currently in an expansion phase, with the introduction of a new irrigation scheme in our district, which will enable increased cropping ground, giving us increased opportunities in cropping as well as growing fodder and growing our prime lamb production.
St Johnstone is a family run team, who collaborate closely with specialist consultants to help with the operation, planning and implementation stock rotations, grazing program and livestock pasture. We plan closely with our agronomist to enable both our wool and cropping enterprises complement each other. We strive to run best practice with our Zentera ZQ+ and RWS accreditation.
The position of full-time Senior Station Hand (Livestock) is a hands-on role in the management of livestock, pastures and supporting other farm operations. This is a practical on-farm role which would suit someone who loves working with livestock, enjoys responsibility and variety in their day, is a team member and able to work independently.
Role & Responsibilities
· Day to day animal husbandry across the prime lamb and wool enterprise.
· Pasture management, including feed monitoring and utilisation.
· Planning and implementing stock rotations and grazing programs.
· Liaising with contractors, including agronomist.
· Maintaining accurate records of animal husbandry management using Agriwebb.
· Operating and managing irrigation systems for livestock pasture and crops.
· Contributing to general farm operations and property R&M, with a focus on stock facilities & fencing.
Skills & Experience
· A minimum of three years’ experience in livestock focused farming operation
· Tertiary or TAF qualifications in agriculture or a related field (preferred)
· Strong livestock handling skills and focus on animal welfare and low-stress stock handling.
· An understanding of pasture-based grazing systems and agronomy.
· Experience using livestock management technology, or willingness to learn.
· A positive attitude, strong work ethic, attention to detail and good communication skills.
· Open to learn, grow and develop in the role.
