Job Description

Join Our Team – Junior Shepherd

Flagstaff Station Holdings is a progressive farming business established in 2023, farming 3,500ha across two diverse properties in Northern Southland. We run 28,000 stock units of sheep, beef, deer, and cereal cropping, with operations split between our high-country farm Flagstaff Station in Athol, and Tower Ridge, an intensive finishing block near Balfour.

We’re looking for a Junior Shepherd to join our team at Tower Ridge. Working closely with the Stock Manager on this block, you’ll support day-to-day livestock operations.

You will need some dry stock experience – this role is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about farming, eager to grow their skills and build a long-term career within a forward thinking and diverse farming business.

This role provides exposure to all aspects of sheep, beef and deer farming, as well as arable cropping across both hill and flat country. You’ll be involved in:

  • Livestock handling.
  • Pasture and feed management.
  • Grazing rotations and stock movement.
  • Seasonal farm operations.
  • Maintenance of water systems, fencing, and farm machinery.
  • There will be opportunities for the right person to take on more responsibility over time.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Have well-trained working dogs, as the role involves significant stock work.
  • Take pride in good stockmanship and practical farming skills.
  • Are fit, motivated, and keen to continue learning.
  • You are a team player and communicate clearly and respectfully with managers and other team members.
  • Are reliable, honest and have a strong work ethic.
  • Have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Are willing to contribute ideas and help improve the way things are done.

What we offer:

  • A competitive salary package based on your experience and skills.
  • Warm, comfortable on-farm accommodation (if required).
  • Modern equipment and well-maintained facilities.
  • Ongoing training, upskilling, and career progression opportunities.
  • A supportive team and variety in your work.
  • A focus on health, safety, and animal welfare.
  • A stunning location with access to great hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. There are local sport and young farmers clubs. Tower Ridge is just 10 minutes from Lumsden, 35 minutes to Gore, and under 90 minutes to Te Anau, Invercargill and Queenstown, with local school bus routes nearby also.

If this sounds like you, please email your CV, a brief cover letter, and at least two work-related references to office@flagstaffstation.co.nz.

Applications close 10/04/2026 – we’ll review applications as they come in.
