Tautara Matawhaura Māori Lands Trust is seeking an experienced Head Shepherd to join our progressive dry stock farming operation 30mins from Rotorua.

About the Trust and Farming Operation

Tautara Matawhaura Māori Lands Trust operates a progressive, large-scale dry stock farming business totalling 3,792 hectares (1,515 ha effective), running approximately 13,500 stock units. The system comprises:

  • Romney ewe flock (approximately 49%)
  • Dairy heifer grazing (approximately 36%)
  • Trading cattle (approximately 15%)

About the Role

Working closely with the Farm Manager, you will take a hands-on leadership role in livestock and pasture management across the Tautara block (590ha). This is a key position focused on high-quality stockmanship, delivery of production targets, and day-to-day farm efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily livestock operations and seasonal programmes
  • Deliver agreed production and animal health targets
  • Maintain good working relationships with other staff.
  • Monitor stock performance, condition, and feed supply
  • Maintain fences, yards, machinery, and farm infrastructure
  • Support pasture management, weed and pest control
  • Operate safely and in line with HazardCo and Trust policies

Key Skills Required

  • Proven experience in sheep and beef or dry stock farming
  • Strong animal husbandry and pasture management skills
  • Demonstrate excellent stockmanship with 3–4 working dogs
  • Competent with machinery, fencing, and general maintenance
  • Reliable, motivated, and a positive team contributor
  • Well-organised with good communication skills
  • Full NZ driver’s licence
  • NZ residency
