Job Description

Medway road, Awatere valley | 50 minutes from Blenheim | 1926 Ha breeding and finishing high country property.

Located at the head of the Medway valley on the fringes of Marlborough’s traditional merino country. 75 ha of flats, 80 ha of undulating/easy hill, 300 ha of easy/moderate hill, 950 ha of moderate to steep hill, 200 ha of steep hill and approximately 319 ha of non-productive land. Carrying around 6,300 SU.

Running a merino stud focused on breeding robust stock that thrive with minimal chemical intervention while cutting wool suited to Icebreaker and Smartwool contracts.

Running 2700 stud, merino and terminal sired mated ewes and finishing as many TS lambs before Christmas as possible. Approximately 400 younger dry ewes run as a ‘wether’ flock.

Calving 200 angus cows and wintering as many young cattle as appropriate for the season. Generally wintering 100 calves and 60 to 70 R2 cattle including replacements.

Due to my parents recently moving into town, we are looking for someone to assist with the day to day running of the property. You will be expected to do a variety of farm work both with the owner and/or his father and by yourself at times.

We are looking for an open-minded person with a strong work ethic to join us here and thrive in a smaller, detailed orientated operation where communication, attention to detail and stock health are key.

Your role will be varied, but we don’t expect you to know everything and will give guidance on how we like things to be done.

You will have:

-          Strong attention to detail for recording stud sheep measurements at various times of the year and animal health treatment recording

-          Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks to a high standard

-          Some dogs but not too many and hopefully the ability or will to fly a drone, something we consider very beneficial here. Stock work is important but because of our size it is not something we are doing every day.

-          Good eye for stock health and pasture covers, a stock person rather than machinery minded but still able to rake hay or drill a paddock when required

-          Ability to step up and get the job done when required, occasional weekend work

-          A desire to learn and upskill and enjoy working alongside our young family

Various accommodation options available on farm including a large 4-bedroom house but this would be most suited to a married couple if we thought they were a good fit for Glen Orkney.

Please send any applications in as it suits as we are conducting rolling interviews as suitable candidates apply.
