Job Description

With the business continuing to grow and develop we are looking for an Experienced Shepherd to join the team at Flagstaff Station. You’ll get to work across a diverse landscape on this farm, from high country to rolling hills and productive river flats.

Flagstaff Station Holdings is a progressive farming business established in 2023, farming 3,500ha across two diverse properties in Northern Southland. We run 28,000 stock units of sheep, beef, deer, and cereal cropping, with operations split between our high-country farm Flagstaff Station in Athol, and Tower Ridge, an intensive finishing block near Balfour.

Key duties include:

  • General day-to-day stock work across all our stock classes – sheep, beef and deer
  • Mustering and dog work
  • Grazing management and pasture monitoring
  • Stock movements and seasonal operations
  • General farm maintenance and infrastructure upkeep

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has 5+ years dry stock farming experience.
  • Has sound livestock knowledge, proven stockmanship and a team of well-controlled dogs.
  • Is driven to achieve strong livestock performance and takes pride in monitoring and improving stock weights and condition.
  • Is keen to play an active role in improving the property’s productivity and results.
  • Is competent in water, fencing, and general farm maintenance skills.
  • Is a team player and clear communicator, who is happy working both independently and with others.
  • Is fit, enthusiastic, and willing to keep learning and growing.

What we offer:

  • An attractive package based on your experience and skills.
  • Warm and comfortable accommodation (if required).
  • Modern, well-maintained equipment and facilities.
  • Ongoing training, upskilling, and career progression opportunities.
  • A supportive team and variety in your work across multiple blocks.
  • Being part of a progressive business that values innovation and continuous improvement.

Flagstaff Station is located on the edge of Athol township, a scenic farming community in Northern Southland. It’s a great place with plenty to offer — from renowned fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation right on your doorstep, to sports clubs, dog trials and a strong local community.

It’s a great base for a range of lifestyles, whether you’re on your own or planning a move with a partner or family. The area has a cafe, local playgroups, school bus routes are nearby, and is within easy reach of Lumsden (20 minutes), Queenstown and Gore (60 minutes), with Invercargill and Te Anau both around 90 minutes away.

Applicants must have NZ residency or valid NZ work visa.
