Shepherd General

Patunga Farms is diverse 1,500ha (effective) hill country sheep and beef property situated 20min west of Taumarunui. The property winters 15,000 SU and operates a breeding and fattening system.  We are introducing Halter and plan to expand this into our breeding cows in the future. We will be looking at building a positive team culture based on communication and good systems where people enjoy coming to work.

A position has become available for a Shepherd General

The position would suit someone who enjoys working with dogs and has a strong interest in stockmanship, learn about pasture management and continue to grow & develop their skill set and level of responsibility. Also have the chance to learn and use Halter. You will be working alongside the Farm Owner and Senior Shepherd, playing an important role in the day-to-day operations.

The successful applicant must have the key attributes:

·        Have at least 2-3 years’ experience in shepherding roles with strong stockmanship and attention to detail

·        At least 4 dogs under full control

·        Can carry out day to day work includes mustering, drenching, dagging, yard work and basic farm maintenance

·        Ability to work independently, as there will be times where you will be required to carry out tasks unsupervised on the fattening block

·        Embrace technology in farming especially Halter and Resolution

·        Good communication skills and ability to work within the team

·        Be physically fit and in good health.

·        Full drivers license 

·        New Zealand Resident

·        Competent with quad bike on hill country and some tractor experience
