General Farm Hand - Livestock, Machinery, Maintenance

Job Description

Who are we?

We are an established, progressive fine wool and beef operation in South Canterbury, with a genuine drive to be the best at what we do. Located in Maungati, just 25 minutes from Timaru, we farm 500 hectares with approximately 7,000 sheep and 600 cattle. We're forward-thinking, using modern technology on farm (including Halter), and we back our people with ongoing training and development. If you take pride in your work and want to be part of a high performing team with room to grow, you'll fit right in.

The role

With the business expanding, we've created a new, permanent role for a keen all-rounder. If you enjoy variety and would rather not spend every day in the tractor cab, this is worth a look — the work is split across three key areas:

•    Stock work — daily livestock handling, shifts and yard work across sheep and cattle, and supporting stud sheep operations

•    Tractor & machinery — general tractor driving, winter feeding, and basic implement work throughout the season

•    General farm maintenance — fencing, water systems, workshop jobs, and keeping the property and gear in top order

It's a great role for someone wanting to build a broad, solid foundation across every part of a modern livestock business — with the chance to work alongside good people and modern technology.

Who are we looking for?

Above all, we're looking for someone with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to learn and grow. This role would suit someone at a junior to intermediate level, though a motivated applicant with limited experience and the right mindset will be strongly considered.

Ideally, you'll bring:

•    A strong work ethic — reliable, honest, and able to get on with it, whether on your own or alongside the team

•    Confidence operating a tractor and other farm machinery

•    Good stockmanship (merino experience a bonus, not essential)

•    Practical skills across fencing, water and basic maintenance, and pride in keeping gear in good order

•    Great communication skills – clear and respectful with management and teammates

•    1 – 2 dogs would be an advantage

What's on offer?

•    A newly created and varied position within a growing and progressive farming business

•    A modern, warm 3-bedroom cottage on farm — well suited to a couple or family

•    A competitive package, with total value reflecting your experience and the value you bring

•    Modern gear and technology and genuine investment in your training and development

•    A great working environment with a supportive, experienced team and a real focus on health & safety

•    The best of South Canterbury on your doorstep: rivers and hills for the weekends, and a good rural community to be part of
