Job Description

This is a hands-on role on a busy family farm 20 minutes from Timaru, running outdoor, free-farmed pigs, sheep and trading beef. It's real farming — outdoors, physical, and in all weathers. It won't suit everyone, and we're not pretending otherwise. But if you like variety, take pride in doing a hard job well, and would rather be outside and busy, this could be a great fit.

About the farm

The Farm is a mixed farming operation running outdoor pigs, sheep and trading cattle.

The farm is operated by a father-and-son team who are looking for another capable person to help share the workload and support the successful daily running of the business.

It's the kind of place you'll learn a lot, quickly, working alongside people who do things properly.

What you'll be doing

The role spans the whole operation, so you'll turn your hand to a bit of everything:

•      Caring for free-range, straw-based outdoor pigs — bedding down huts, working with sows and boars and helping at weaning

•      General stock work across sheep and trading cattle

•      Plenty of tractor work — the farm runs Fendt Tractors and does most jobs mechanically, so you'll be in the cab regularly

•      Fencing and general farm maintenance

The outdoor pig work is physical and continues through all seasons.  For the right person it's satisfying and varied work with animals that are free-farmed and well cared for.

What we're looking for

You don't need to have done it all before — a good attitude and a willingness to get stuck in matters most. Ideally, you'll bring:

•      A strong work ethic and a positive, can-do approach

•      Confidence on a tractor, or the aptitude and keenness to get there (Fendt experience a bonus)

•      Sound livestock experience and confidence working around animals

•      Pig experience, or a genuine willingness to learn an outdoor pig system

•      Practical, hands-on skills — fencing and general farm maintenance

•      The fitness and resilience to work outdoors in demanding conditions

•      The ability to work independently while communicating well with a small family team

•      A full NZ driver licence

What's on offer

  • A varied position across pigs, sheep, beef, machinery and general farm work
  • Plenty of tractor time and access to good machinery
  • The opportunity to build experience within a distinctive outdoor pig system
  • A small, family-run working environment where your contribution will matter
  • A farm located approximately 20 minutes from Timaru
  • The option to live locally and drive to the farm
  • A remuneration package reflecting the experience and capability you bring
