We are excited to be looking for a Shepherd to join our team at Glen Eden. If you’re keen to be involved in a forward thinking and successful business, that will give you space and flexibility to do your job well and enjoy life at the same time, then this job could be for you.

This role is part of a team of four, so you’ll have support and training should you need it and enough space to exercise your budding management skills and give your dogs plenty of work. We will provide all the necessary equipment and gear; you just need to bring your dogs and an enquiring mind.

We run a diverse sheep & beef, arable and tourism business which covers a total of 1430ha. The business is run as three blocks - Glen Eden 650ha, Ngakouka 500ha and Awatane 280ha which are all within 5 minutes quadbike driving distance from each other.

The Successful Applicant:

We'd like a shepherd that isn't afraid to ask questions and someone with initiative, intelligence, and the desire to do well. Preferably, you will have worked on a farm for a year or two giving you the skills necessary to perform the role. However, for the right candidate we will provide you with the necessary training.

As a minimum, you should have a couple of working dogs under good control. You’ll be exposed to farm policy decisions such as when to buy and sell stock, feed budgeting, pasture measuring, and which fertiliser mix we should use. You will have regular contact with suppliers such as trucking firms, stock agents and shearers therefore you will need good communication skills.

We use technology extensively and have recently started using Halter. It is important to us that you are motivated, enthusiastic and keen to learn how to use all the different forms of technology. Training can be provided for Farm IQ & Halter should you require it. As a minimum we require you to be computer literate.

Like all farms, we have busy periods and not so busy periods. You’ll need to flexible enough to deal with this and you’ll have the opportunity to manage your own time. We have a weekend roster system allowing everyone the opportunity to have down time.

A good sense of humour, easy manner, ‘get up and go’ attitude is required as well as qualities such as honesty & respect.

 Location and offer:

Remuneration will be based on experience.  We have a renovated two-bedroom cottage that is provided with the position. We’ll offer the opportunity to join a discussion group as well as regular farm field days and other industry events.

We’re lucky enough to live ten kilometres from Martinborough village which has a supermarket, movie theatre, multiple cafes & restaurants, wineries, library, tennis, squash, rugby, football, netball and golf clubs and much more.
