The Joan Fernie Charitable Trust (JFCT) operates three large sheep and beef stations in Hawke’s Bay and is committed to developing talent within New Zealand’s sheep and beef industry. In partnership with the Waipaoa Cadet Training Farm trustees, JFCT established the Moeangiangi Station Cadet Training Trust (MSCTT) to continue Joan Fernie’s legacy by developing farm-ready young farmers.
Moeangiangi Station, a 3,609 ha coastal property north of Napier, runs a commercial sheep and beef breeding and finishing operation supported by forage crops. The cadet programme to be launched in January 2027 with five cadets, expands to 10 annually from 2028, supported by significant investments in purpose-built cadet facilities, staff housing, and infrastructure upgrades.
WHAT
Reporting to the Station Manager, the Stock Manager at Moeangiangi Station plays a key leadership role in both the station’s livestock operations and its cadet training programme. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of stock management, including feed planning, record-keeping, livestock movements, while maintaining high standards across the team.
A central part of the role is supporting, mentoring, and training cadets, whilst adhering to farm safety practices. The Stock Manager also maintains working dogs, supervises staff, and helps manage events such as cadet orientation and graduation. Additionally, the role involves representing Moeangiangi to visitors, ensuring the property and cadets consistently demonstrate professional standards, and promoting a positive, safety-focused farm culture.

WHO
Our client is looking for a Stock Manager with strong livestock skills and a passion for mentoring cadets. The below are also key to success in this role:
· Extensive experience in sheep and beef farming, including breeding, finishing, stock movement, feed budgeting, and livestock record-keeping.
· Proven ability to lead and manage staff, delegate tasks, maintain work standards, and foster a positive, collaborative team culture.
· Experience training young farmers or staff in practical farming skills, stock handling, and safety procedures.
· A competent team of 6 working dogs.
· Knowledge of general farm maintenance, infrastructure management, and operational planning.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to liaise effectively with cadets, staff, management, and visitors.
· Comfortable representing the farm in public settings, hosting visitors, and promoting the cadet training programme.
· Knowledge and application of farm safety practices, including risk management for staff, cadets, and livestock.
