Cattle Stud Manager (Development Role)

Job Description

Mount Linton Station – Western Southland

Mount Linton Station is a 12,145ha large-scale sheep, beef and forestry operation, carrying approximately 92,000 su. Our Angus herd of 5,000 head has been a core focus of the station since the 1980s. Over the past four years, we have made significant investment into developing a disciplined, performance-driven stud breeding programme with a clear long-term vision.

Our current Cattle Stud Manager will be leaving to take up a family farming opportunity. While we are sorry to see him go, we are proud of the contribution he has made in shaping the programme to where it is today.

We are now seeking a Cattle Stud Manager to build on this progress and help lead the programme into its next phase.

The Opportunity

This is not a role for someone looking to reinvent the wheel.

Instead, we are looking for a motivated, emerging stockperson who is ready to step up, take ownership, and grow their career within a well-established and clearly defined stud system.

You’ll work closely with the General Manager and wider team to execute and refine an already successful breeding programme, while building your own capability in stud stock management, genetics, and industry engagement.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Implement and manage the cattle stud breeding programme
  • Maintain accurate and high-quality performance and genetic records
  • Assist with artificial breeding programmes (AI and ET)
  • Ensure animal health, condition, and weight targets are achieved
  • Support bull sales, client relationships, and marketing activities
  • Contribute to industry engagement and the ongoing growth of the stud

In additional to stud herd responsibilities, the successful applicant will assist with our commercial herd, including calf marking and weaning, and will oversee and manage our Wairaki block, finishing 900 Angus steers, ewe lambing, and lamb finishing.

What We’re Looking For

  • A developing stockperson with strong fundamentals in stock work
  • A genuine interest in genetics, breeding systems, and performance recording
  • Someone who is coachable, open-minded, and willing to learn
  • A team player who communicates well and contributes positively to the culture
  • High attention to detail and pride in doing things properly
  • A strong work ethic and desire to build a long-term career in the industry

What This Role Is Not

This is not a role for someone wanting to come in and “do things their own way” from day one.

We have a clear breeding philosophy and programme that is delivering results. The successful applicant will respect this foundation and build on it, not replace it.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to take real ownership of a well-established cattle stud programme
  • Mentorship and support from experienced leadership
  • Exposure to advanced breeding technologies and industry networks
  • A pathway to develop into a high-level genetics and stud management professional
  • A positive, team-focused working environment
  • On-site accommodation of a modern three-bedroom family home, with garaging

If you’re ready to take the next step in your career and be part of something that is building real momentum in the cattle genetics space, we’d like to hear from you.

If this sounds like you, send your CV to office@mountlinton.co.nz, or call Mat Middlemass on 021 799 986 for more information.
