Turihaua Station is seeking a motivated and proactive Junior Shepherd to join our progressive Angus Stud and commercial operation.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with 2–3 years of shepherding experience who is passionate about livestock, eager to gain exposure to stud operations, and looking to work alongside an experienced team while taking on genuine responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Stockmanship & Welfare: Implement stock rotation plans, monitor stock weights and condition, carry out low-stress stock handling, and maintain animal health treatments.
- Stud Operations: Participate in annual bull sales, field days, client visits, and stud stock selection and handling.
- Pasture & Land Care: Assist with pasture management, pole planting/erosion control, weed control, and monitoring feed quality.
- General Maintenance: Carry out fencing repairs (conventional/electric), track maintenance, water system repairs, and care/servicing of farm vehicles, machinery, and grounds.
- Operational Responsibility: Step up to assist with daily operations and take responsibility on-site when the Head Shepherd is away.
What We Are Looking For
- Experience: 2–3 years of practical shepherding experience (stud farm experience is a bonus).
- Dog Team: A small team of well-behaved working dogs under excellent command.
- Practical Skills: Experience with fencing and hill country tractor work.
- Attributes: Strong work ethic, attention to detail, clear communication, and a proactive, forward-thinking attitude.
- Licences & Safety: Full Driver’s Licence required (Class 2 licence, Quad Bike, and Chainsaw certificates are preferred). A strong commitment to Health & Safety practices is essential.
