About Glen Dene

Glen Dene is a 6000 Ha property situated on the shores of Lake Hawea in Central Otago. The property runs Sheep, Beef and Deer along with offering one of the country’s premier hunting experiences. The property is run in conjunction with two other breeding and finishing properties and is very close to Wanaka and the town’s many outdoor recreational opportunities.

We are looking for a capable, reliable and motivated Shepherd to join our farm team.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in working with livestock, enjoys varied farm work and can work confidently both as part of a team and independently. The Shepherd will assist with the day-to-day operation of the farm, helping ensure stock are well managed and the property is maintained to a high standard.

About the role

Working alongside the Farm Manager, your responsibilities will include:

Stockmanship & Animal Management

·       Safely and efficiently handling the various stock classes on the property.

·       Implementing the farm’s animal health plan under the guidance of the Farm Manager or  Vet.       

·       Maintaining accurate stock tallies and reporting these to the Manager.

·       Supplementary Feeding of stock as and when required.

Farm Maintenance & Machinery

·       Maintaining fences and gateways and completing repairs as required.

·       Identifying and reporting maintenance requirements.

·       Operating all farm vehicles safely and responsibly.

·       Operating and basic maintenance of farm tractors including some cultivation work.

·       Showing initiative in identifying and reporting on any weeds and pests.

General Farm Duties

·       Assisting the Farm Manager with the day-to-day running of the property.

·       Shifting irrigation.

·       Erecting break fences for winter grazing.

·       Maintaining and training a working team of dogs.

·       Working unsupervised when required.

·       Assisting with the hunting business when required.

·       Communicating effectively with farm owners, staff and others including hunting parties.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking someone who:

·       Has at least 2 years experience as a Shepherd and a capable team of working dogs.

·       Is looking to grow and enhance their abilities across all aspects of a farming business.

·       Has good interpersonal and communication skills

·       Is reliable, punctual and takes pride in their work.

·       Can prioritise tasks and work efficiently to a high standard.

·       Is comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

·       Takes responsibility for equipment, vehicles and other business resources.

·       Understands the importance of workplace health and safety.
