High Country Tourism Guide – Hunting, Farm, 4WD & ATV

$75,000 - $85,000 yearly

Job Description

Go Tekapo is looking for a practical, capable and outdoors-minded person to join our team in Lake Tekapo in a full-time tourism and operations role.

Based across Mt Hay Station and Balmoral Station, the role operates across two iconic Mackenzie High Country properties covering around 20,000 hectares combined.

This is not your standard tourism job. One day you could be guiding a hunting trip, the next running a farm experience with working dogs and shearing, and the following day taking guests into the high country by 4WD or leading a self-drive ATV experience.

We’re looking for someone with a genuine rural background who is confident around livestock, working dogs, vehicles, firearms and the outdoors, and who enjoys delivering great experiences for guests.

What the job involves

You’ll prepare for and actively guide a range of Go Tekapo experiences, including:

  • Guiding hunting trips and outdoor experiences
  • Running farm tours and high-country farm experiences
  • Sheep shearing and working-dog demonstrations
  • Guiding 4WD and self-drive ATV experiences
  • Guest transport, check-in and hosting
  • Preparing vehicles, equipment and tour areas
  • Carrying out basic vehicle and equipment checks
  • Preparing and handling animals used in tourism experiences, including milking the cow
  • Helping improve existing tours and develop new experiences
  • Using booking and rostering systems

This is a flexible tourism role, so some weekend, evening and split-shift work will be required depending on bookings and seasonal demand.

What we’re looking for

  • Genuine hunting experience and confidence in the outdoors
  • A strong rural background and confidence around livestock
  • Two capable working dogs suitable for demonstrations would be a strong advantage
  • Shearing experience, or willingness to learn
  • Confidence driving 4WD vehicles in rural conditions
  • Strong people skills and a practical, flexible attitude
  • Full New Zealand driver licence
  • New Zealand firearms licence
  • Ability to obtain a Passenger endorsement and pass a criminal history check

What’s on offer

  • Full-time, permanent employment
  • Around $80,000 per year, depending on experience and capability
  • Subsidised farm accommodation
  • Training across our tourism and operational systems
  • Plenty of variety and opportunities to build new skills
  • Scope to take on greater responsibility as the business grows
  • The chance to help shape and improve a unique high-country tourism operation

This role will suit someone who can work independently, takes pride in doing things properly and genuinely enjoys working with people.
