Your Role

As the Farm Manager you will work closely with the Livestock Leadership Team (LLT) to implement farm plans and oversee the day-to-day operation of Poukawa. You will lead a team of 2 - 3 shepherds, with support from the wider team, to oversee stock rotations, pasture and feed management, animal health and welfare, weighing and recording, performance reporting, health and safety, and general farm maintenance.

The role provides a strong opportunity for development, particularly for someone with an interest in finishing lambs and bulls and working with a range of improved forages. With the support of the LLT, the successful applicant will gain valuable experience across the wider business, with opportunities to take on greater responsibility and contribute new ideas as they become established in the role.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Strong understanding of sheep and beef farming fundamentals, with a passion for lamb and bull finishing.
  • Proven experience in a livestock farming role, with Farm Manager or senior-level experience advantageous.
  • Strong stockmanship and understanding of animal health, welfare and livestock performance.
  • Good understanding of pasture and feed management, with experience across a range of forages advantageous.
  • Proven ability to lead a team, with a genuine interest in developing and supporting staff.
  • Strong planning, organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage seasonal workloads.
  • Confidence with technology, record keeping and reporting, with experience using farm management systems advantageous.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across the wider business.
  • A proactive approach with the ability to take ownership, contribute ideas and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • A strong team of 3 - 5 working dogs.
  • A full New Zealand Driver’s Licence.

About Brownrigg Agriculture & Poukawa

Brownrigg Agriculture is a large-scale, privately owned Hawke’s Bay farming business operating across cropping and livestock. Its livestock operation finishes 100,000 - 130,000 lambs, 3,500 - 4,000 Friesian bulls and 360 Angus cows annually across approximately 5,000ha. The business focuses on animal performance, pasture development, traceability and people development, with a strong “One Business” culture and centralised Farm Support Team.        

Poukawa is a 900ha effective mixed farming operation combining lamb and beef finishing with high-value summer cash crops. The farm has a mix of steeper and easier hill country, along with flat-to-rolling areas and seasonal grazing around Lake Poukawa. It is well supported by improved forages including lucerne, plantain, brassicas and winter annual grasses. The farm is well subdivided and highly developed, with permanent and electric fencing, two woolsheds, multiple sheep and cattle yards, and a fully reticulated water system supplying troughs across the property.
