Your Role

As 2IC, you’ll work closely with the Station Manager to help with the day-to-day running of Auraki Station. This is a hands-on, varied role on challenging hill country, offering the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of station life. Strong stockmanship and animal health knowledge are essential, along with confidence mustering steep hill country and handling large mobs of sheep and cattle with a well-controlled team of working dogs. Good horse skills are also required, with Can-Ams and horses used for mustering.

It’s an ideal next step for someone with 2–3 years’ experience in a senior farming role who is ready to take on greater responsibility and have input into the future of the business.

You will also bring:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with good attention to detail.
  • Confidence using computers and a willingness to embrace technology and systems such as FarmIQ.
  • A proactive, practical approach with the ability to get things done.
  • A strong commitment to Health & Safety.
  • A positive attitude, strong work ethic and a good sense of humour.

About Auraki Station

Auraki Station is a family-owned 1,700ha sheep and beef operation on the Parapara’s in the Central North Island, between Whanganui and Raetihi. The property combines river flats with medium to steep hill country and is in an exciting phase of development, with the owners two years into a five-year infrastructure plan. Significant investment has been made in infrastructure, with further improvements planned.

The operation is focused on sheep and cattle breeding, with Romney genetics, Suftex terminal sires, and Charolais and Angus cattle. The focus moving forward is on producing high-quality stock, improving performance and progressively increasing the amount of progeny finished on farm. With a clear long-term direction and continued investment, Auraki Station offers an opportunity to join a progressive family-owned operation and play a key role in its ongoing development.

What’s on Offer

  • Supportive and inclusive farming environment, with an experienced manager who is willing to share their knowledge and support your development.
  • A good level of autonomy in your day-to-day work.
  • Comfortable accommodation in a fully insulated, double-glazed three-bedroom home with open-plan kitchen and living, freestanding fire for heating, and a garage.
  • Enjoy the Central North Island lifestyle, with hunting and fishing on your doorstep, plus skiing, tramping and a range of sporting activities nearby.
